In many communities, older adults are too often overlooked. Once people retire or step away from the workforce, they can become invisible in a society that frequently prioritizes productivity over presence. Yet within this generation lies a lifetime of wisdom, creativity, and stories waiting to be shared.
Through the work of Broadway Inspirational Voices (BIV), that creativity is being rediscovered and celebrated.
Through its BIV Arts and Education programs, the organization partners with community institutions to bring performing arts experiences to people who may not otherwise have access to them. Rather than delivering a fixed curriculum, the team begins by listening. Each program is designed through collaboration with the community it serves, ensuring that the arts programming reflects the needs, interests, and voices of participants.
One of the most meaningful focuses of this work has been engaging older adults through intergenerational arts programming.
These programs create opportunities for seniors to reconnect with their creativity through activities such as storytelling, acting, music, poetry, and artistic expression. At the same time, they bring together younger artists and community members to create conversations across generations.
For many participants, these sessions become more than artistic workshops—they become spaces where older adults are reminded that their voices still matter. Participants are encouraged to share their stories, express their creativity, and reconnect with passions they may have set aside over time.
The work reflects a powerful philosophy embraced by the organization: honoring the past while uplifting the future.
This idea is captured in the theme “Rooted and Rising.” The concept reflects the belief that progress and growth are only possible when communities remain connected to the generations who came before them. By acknowledging where we come from and whose legacy we carry forward, communities can grow stronger together.
Through these arts programs, Broadway Inspirational Voices is helping ensure that older adults remain active contributors to community life rather than being pushed to the margins.
By creating spaces for creativity, connection, and shared storytelling, the organization is helping bridge generational divides and celebrate the voices of those who helped shape the communities we live in today.
In doing so, the program reminds everyone involved of a powerful truth: honoring the past is essential to building the future.
